Общий способ описания услуг и модель пользовательских процессов (программ) для реализации этих услуг. Клиент запрашивает услуги сервера. Клиент непосредственно взаимодействует с пользователем и может запрашивать услуги многочисленных серверов. Примерами могут служить сервер имен/парадигма разрешения имен в DNS и соотношение файл-сервер/файл-клиент в системе с NFS и бездисковыми станциями.
